1/ What’s all this RSE stuff all about then?
RSE stands for Race Specific Equipment. It generally refers to a set of armour that is obtainable via a quest for each of Vana'diel's five races. It is equipable around levels 27-33.
2/ Okay, so what’s this armour like?
It is designed to compensate for the short comings of which ever particular race, so for example Taru-Taru armour has plenty of extra hit points and strength. Below is a list of each race's armour. In appearance it will be look like your starting armour but in a different hue, Mithra and Taru's armour is red for example.
Taru-taru RSE:
Wonder Kaftan (Level 33): Def=18 HP+36 STR+1 VIT+2 MND+1
Wonder Mitts (Level 27): Def=6 HP+12 STR+3
Wonder Braccae (Level 31): Def=12 HP+21 STR+1 VIT+2 MND+2

Custom M/F Gloves (Level 27): Def+6 HP+12 MP+4 STR+3 DEX+3 VIT-1 AGI-1
Custom Slacks/Pants (Level 31): Def+12 MP+32 STR-1 MND+3 CHR+1
Custom M/F Boots (Level 29): Def+5 HP+4 MP+12 DEX-1 AGI+3 INT+3 MND-1
3/ Do I need this armour?
Not always no, its defense is generally low for its level so it might not suit a main battle tank! That said it can be useful to unconventional race/job combinations like Taru-taru Dark Knights or Galka White Mages. You may decide you only want one piece to, Elvaan mage types swear by the gloves for instance.
4/ Hmm....well I like the look of it, how do I get it then?
Ah well that’s the nub of it isn't it. It’s easiest to break the quest down into three components, getting the quest in the first place, acquiring a Treasure Chest Key and then finding a Magical pattern within a Treasure Chest. You will also want to be around level 30 if you are attempting it with friends and higher still if you plan to solo it, more on this later.
5/ Sounds like a lot of work! I'm feeling flush, cant I just buy it?
Certainly can the armour isn't Rare/Ex and can be traded, sold and bought. On Midgardsormr server prices range from 15-20k per piece and are most often sold at Jeuno's auction houses. One word of caution each character may only get the armour once, so if you sell yours and decide you want it again later you would have to re-buy it.
6/ Okies, how do you pick up the quest?
The quest (called "The Goblin Tailor") is acquired from one of the surly Goblins called Guttrix in their shop in the Lower Jeuno section of the city of Jeuno. The shop is at H9 of Lower Jeuno
7/ Sounds easy, what’s the catch?
You'll need Jeuno based fame. Fame for Jeuno is calculated on the strength of a combination of quests (not missions) completed in each of the other three city states and quests in Jeuno itself (Like the Chocobo quest). Although there is no exact number of completed quests anyone can agree on the estimate currently runs at around 40-50 total completed quests before you can pick this quest up. The Goobiebag quest should become available at the same time as this one. There are a number of guides and F.A.Q's available for tips on raising fame out there.
8/ I got the quest! Now what?
Guttrix didn't give you much information to work with eh? The magical patterns are found in the treasure chests of three dungeons (click for maps) Shakhrami Maze Ordelle Caves Gusgen Mines. More on the dungeons themselves later.
Before you can you open a chest however you'll need to get a Treasure chest key (Please note Thief characters can use lock pick type items to open treasure chests again more on this later). These items are of the Rare/Ex kind and therefore can't be traded or sold, you may only also have one key in your possession (both pack and Mog safe) at any one time.
9/ Sooo....what has the keys?
Most of the high level monsters in each dungeon have a chance of dropping the key, it is generally believed that the tougher the monster the better the chance to drop one. Below are unconfirmed, but often used lists of which monsters can drop a key.
Shakhrami Maze
Goblin Furrier
Goblin Shaman
Goblin Pathfinder
Goblin Smithy
Caterchipillar
Wight
Labyrinth Scorpion
Abyss Worm
Protozoan
Air Elemental
Ichorous Ire
Ordelle Caves
Air Elemental
Goblin Shaman
Goblin Smithy
Goblin Pathfinder
Goliath Beetle
Napam
Stroper
Stroper Chyme
Water Elemental
Gusgen Mines
Sad Fly
Gallinipper
Rancid Ooze
Banshee
Mauthe Dog
Myconid
Wight
Ghast
Wendigo
Spunkie
Amphisbeana
Thunder Elemental
Greater Pugil
10/ What level do I need to be to hunt these?
Naturally that depends on how many of you are attempting it and your class make up. A balanced full party could perhaps hunt the keys from the easier monsters around 25+ Soloing might need a much higher character, many of the area's concerned will have aggressive and linking monsters. People often recruit the help of higher level friends to obtain the key as they can’t be traded. Having the Thieves ability "Treasure Hunter" in your party will help the chances to obtain one no end.
Key hunting can be very frustrating, sometimes a key can take hours to turn up other times it might drop from the very first critter. If you really want the armour a healthy dose of patience can be needed!
11/ Woohoo! I got a key....now what?
Do not use it on the first treasure chest you see!
The magical pattern's spawn system rotates on a racial basis each Vana'diel week (8 hours real time as it’s an 8 day week). Which race and gender patterns and which dungeon they are appearing in change, to find out which pattern and dungeon are currently spawning you will have speak with Guttrix.
12/ That doesn’t sound good, that Goblin had fleas.
As it’s not often practical to run back to Jeuno to speak with him and then run back to a dungeon not knowing how long you have left in your cycle some clever soul designed the Virtual Vana'diel Timer. This very useful tool will not only show you which pattern cycle is currently up but forth coming ones so you can plan ahead.
Remember the cycle includes gender of your character for all races other than Galka and Mithra!
The timer links to your operating system's clock and the times shown are in that. If you are feeling paranoid about not wasting your key to be certain that its accurate you can wait at Guttrix once and check that the cycle has indeed flipped in accordance with the timer.
13/ Phew. Okies I'm armed with a key and I’m going to be at the right dungeon at the right time.....Now what!
Now you have to hunt your treasure chest. (Don’t forget to pack the key, there is a real Doh! moment waiting to happen there otherwise!). Don't be surprised if you see a lot of other members of your race running around like headless chickens in the dungeon, they will be after the chests to! These other people might look higher level than your party, this is because soloing this quest at the level the armour is worn is very very tricky so it is often just left to later levels when monsters wont be aggressive.
One T-chest can spawn at anyone of between 6-15ish fixed locations depending on the dungeon at anyone time. If a chest was opened for the purpose of getting a magical pattern it will respawn (at any one of the points randomly) more or less instantly. If the chest was opened by someone not after a pattern but standard loot then the delay can be between 5-15 minutes.
If you or your group has access to the Sneak, Deodorize and Invisible (referred to after as S/D/I) spells they can help no end in allowing you to roam the dungeons looking for a chest. Note however that the chests cannot be opened whilst invisible and the spell will need to be manually removed in order to do so.
To open a chest trade the key with it or use the key and target the chest, you must be pretty close to it to do this.
14/ What are the dungeons like? Where do the chests spawn in each one?
If you have hunted for the keys you should have an inkling into their layout, however all three are rather difficult to navigate and have their own distinct problems. Scouting preparation can be time well spent
A/ Shakhrami Maze.
The maps for the locations of the T-chests can be found here. Don’t forget that there are two levels worth of maps.
The most striking feature of the Maze is that it is spilt into two distinct layers each with its own entrance and exit. The upper layer is entered at K5 in the far North eastern part of Tahrongi Canyon. The second entrance exit into the lower part is located at F6 in Burburimu peninsula. It is possible to enter the upper section and drop down to the lower section, but it would then require a run around to Tahrongi again. The black mage Escape spell might help here.
More or less everything in the lower levels will be aggressive and link, the Goblins, Crawlers, Undead, and higher level of Bats/worms for example.
B/ Ordelle Caves.
The maps for the T-chest locations is here.
Ordelle involves a great deal of traveling to cover all the possible spawn points. It revolves primarily around a very long climb up a set of stairs which lead to four drop holes, and another drop point back into a room with three possible chest points (The one where the Paladin quest takes place). It has a number of entrances and exits which are found in the large earth cracks in La'Thiene.
It has a lot of aggressive and linking Goblins in it, also the Bats on the climb up the long stairs can be aggressive to. Some Mushrooms will be to.
C/ Gusgen Mines.
The maps for the T-chest locations are here.
The entrance to this dungeon is at L7 in the Konschtat Highlands. The haunted mines revolve around a large central chamber, it has a number of one way doors to. The lever will open them but you need to find an alternate way to get back, shouting for someone on the other side to open it can work occasionally.
The dungeon is mostly filed with undead which is aggressive and link, although there are a good number of other kinds of monsters. Worms/Flies/Hounds/Pugils.
15/ Should we camp one high concentration of chest spawn points or run about looking?
That rather depends on a numbers of things, if you are aware there are other people actively running about looking for chests and your party formation isn’t mobile enough to allow easy movement it might prove best to sit at one spot and hope.
If you can roam to look for them that is the better option, simply because you won’t know if anyone is out there causing fresh ones to spawn. It also increases your chance to find one. Again S/D/I'ing will be a great boon to helping with this method.
16/ I got a pattern!
You have to take it back to Jeuno and Guttrix before you can acquire another of these key items. You don’t however have to make it back to him within the race/gender period it can be traded in for one piece of the armour at and time, but why wait!
17/ I'm a Thief, I can use lock picks to open T-chests right?
Correct. There are three kinds of lock pick useable by thieves. They vary in quality and ability to open higher level chests without setting off potentially fatal traps. In order of quality they are and the prices per key and per stack on Midgardsormr server at Jeuno as a reference.
Thief Tools 1.2k/8k Living Key 2k/15k Skeleton Key 3.5k/22k
There are no level requirements so it is possible that sub job thieves can use them, however the chance to open the chest may in part depend on the level of the Thief using them. Living keys or better are recommended for the T-chests involved in this quest.
18/ Any other tips?
Keep a cool head. You may find high level characters who wont get aggressive monsters troubling them looking for the armour at the same time as you. If you explain to them that you are looking to they might even offer to help you. But try not to get too frustrated if you encounter rude players competing for the chests and keys.
Being a character with access to the S/D/I spells (or potions if you are feeling rich) can allow you to explore and solo this quest at lower levels. Go around cautiously and mentally note the places you feel it's safe to head to to re-apply the spells when needed. Be aware of which monsters need which effect to avoid detection.
Failing that, you could badger a high level character/friend to try and help you out with the key acquiring and T-chest hunting stages.
Pack a Scroll of Instant warp (bought with conquest points from a gate guard) when possible for emergency exits. |
