What is Fame?
Fame is your reputation with the people of Vana’diel. The more fame you have the more NPCs will like you and trust you.

What does Fame do?
It changes NPC reactions to you. Merchants will give you discounts on their wares and you will be able to do more difficult quests.

How do I raise Fame?
By doing Quests. The more quests you complete the more known your name is.

Where do I get Quests?
Various NPCs in each town will give you quests. Some quests you can do right off the bat, but others you will need to raise your Fame Level before the NPC will trust you enough.

Does my Fame level transfer between the towns?
Not really. The starting towns, Bastok, San D’Oria, and Windhurst, have their own factions. So while you may be a local legend in Windhurst, the Merchants in Bastok are still going charge you full price for what you are buying.

Jeuno, and Selbina are exceptions to this. They have their own faction, but are influenced by your fame in Bastok, San D’Oria, and Windhurst.

Jeuno is influenced by the average of your Bastok, San D’Oria, Windhurst, and Jeuno Fame.

Selbina is influenced by the lowest of your Bastok or San D’Oria Fame as well as Quests done in Rabao.

What about the other towns?
Mhuara and Khazam quests add to Windhurst Fame and Norg adds to Tenshodo Fame.

What is Tenshodo Fame and how do I raise it?
The Tenshodo is basically the Rogue faction. You can raise this fame by doing Quests for the Tenshodo in Bastok and Jeuno, The Brugaire Consortium in San D’Oria, the Cat Burglar in Windhurst, or any quests in Norg.

How do I know what my Fame level is?
There are NPCs in the various towns you can talk to to find out. When you talk to them they will say something like “Bob?... Never heard of you. Try helping out some people.” Or “Why, if it isn’t Bob! I’ve heard great things about you!” depending on your level of Fame.

The NPCs are:

NPC: Location Map Grid
Falco Port Bastok, In front of the Steaming Sheep E6
Namonutice San D’Oria South, In the Lion Spring Inn K6
Zabirego-Hajigo Windhurst Waters North, in Timbre Timbers F10
Mendi Lower Jeuno, Across from Maag-Deeg's Magic H8
Ney Hiparujah Kazham, I11
Vaultimand Norg, H8
Waylea Rabao, G9

Each one will give you a message based on your fame level.

How many Fame levels are there?
There are nine different fame levels.

How many quests do I need to do to change my Fame level?
It depends on the fame level, but basically:

Fame Level: # of Quests
Unknown 0-10
Vague Recollection 10-20
Heard of 20-30
Known 30-50
Talked about 50-70
Talk of the town 70-90
Everyone knows you 90-110
Almost a Hero 110-140
Hero 140+

Does repeating a quest count?
Yes.
