Finding Crystals
You can find crystals during your travels by killing enemies. Each crystal type represents one of the elements of Vana'diel. When you leave your home be sure to ask the guards at the gate to cast signet on you. These guards are stationed near the gates of the capital and at outposts where your region is in control. The length of your signet will vary, it is rumored it is based on where you travel and your rank within your nation but this is not confirmed at this time. When marked with your country’s signet, you will be granted the ability to find and carry crystals as a reward for participating in your nation’s conquest campaign. If you are visiting another nation, look for the consulate for your own nation within the city walls in order to obtain your signet. You cannot obtain a signet at an outpost that is currently run by an opposing nation except in the event of an allied campaign. Allied campaigns occur when one of the nations of San d'Oria, Bastok, or Windurst gains control of half of the regions of Vana'diel. At that time the other two nations will form an alliance, or an allied campaign. The border guards of allied nations will bestow Signets upon characters who are allied with either country in the alliance.
If you choose to party with friends, only one person in the group must have their signet active in order to have crystals drop from various monsters. However, as soon as their signet fades crystals will cease to appear. It should be noted that the more members of a party have an active signet, the higher the probability that the party will find crystals. As a result it is best to refresh your signet when ever possible and to keep track of who still has theirs active. Crystals will only be available in areas that are under one of the three nations' control. Even if the region is controlled by an opposing nation, you will still benefit from crystals. Only if the beastmen have successfully taken over the region will crystals be unavailable as a reward.
Crystals play a vital role in Crafting. They lend their magical abilities to everyday items to form new, more powerful items or supplies. Much like we would use a stove today to cook our supper, a fire crystal might serve the same purpose in the world of Vana'diel. Crystals can also be used to fertilize plants in order to give them magical properties. Due to their use in making useful items, stacks of crystals will bring in quite a profit at the local Auction House. Even if you are not interested in crafting, be sure to save them.
Stacks of crystals can also be donated to your nation in order to increase your standing. Donating stacks of crystals might make it possible to skip some missions and still obtain the next rank and its rewards. Only missions that are not essential to the storyline can be skipped and they are rare. There may also be a time where you must donate crystals in order to advance due to a lack of rank points.
Crystals are especially linked through their elemental attributes. Everything about a crystal corresponds to the element it is named after. Their magical properties as well as their locations are evident of this. Water crystals will often drop from fish, earth from various worms or bugs, and wind from flying creatures such as bees. There are always exceptions to the rule but it is generally a good guideline to follow when searching for a specific type of crystal.
The 8 Crystal Types and their abilities
Fire Combust/Burn/Heat
Water Dissolve/liquefy
Earth Join/Connect/Combine
Wind Separate/Cut/Divide
Ice Coagulate/Freeze
Thunder Decompose/Disassembly
Light Reproduce/Enrich
Darkness Decay/Corrupt
Due to their elemental nature, there are certain days of the week where some crystals are weaker because of the environment and its influence. These are usually opposing elements such as Fire and Ice. When using a crystal to synthesize you are activating its stored elemental power. As a result, if the environment is especially hostile towards the crystal you are working with, it might weaken its power or make it more fragile which will result in a failure. Imagine trying to start a fire in the rain: it is possible but will be much harder to achieve than if it was a clear day. Failures mean a loss of not only the crystal but possibly the items used with it. It is a good idea to memorize this chart as the day of the week you choose to craft on might favor your luck.
Crystals and their weak days
Firesday Ice
Earthsday Thunder
Watersday Fire
Windsday Earth
Icesday Wind
Thundersday Water
Lightsday Darkness
Darksday Light |
