Playstation 2 Game Reviews: Socom 3: U.S. Navy Seals

Socom 3: U.S. Navy Seals
More indepth single player. Bigger maps and, consequesntly, longer missions. Terrain is particularly well presented. Enemy AI is typically too easy once you know the trigger spots. Usual bumbling fireteam. The introduction of land and water vehicles and the ability to swim are added bonuses. Nicely spaced save points reduce the frustration factor as well as serve as healing and resupply points. This is a welcome and, I believe, fair addition this time, since missions sometimes tend to be spoiled by the inepitude of your own fire teams shoddy Ai. The same choice of third or first person views fortunately return. All weapons have a nice feel to them when firing, especially the M16 which can really make mince meat out of your enemy. Accuracy could be just a tad better but is livable.

Online play has a lot of gun customizing, large maps, vehicles tied in very nicely. Accomodates up to 32 players. Game types include: Team Death Match, Demolition, Extraction, Convoy, Escort, etc. As expected, Convoy has the vehicles and there is temporary fun to be had in driving your jeep or truck directly into one of the maps bodies of water. Still retains cumbersome grenade/gun swap from Socom 2 - a big inconvienace when the enemy has the drop on you. This time around there is no ranking system for those who don't register with a credit card. (In Socom II online, everyone was ranked and no credit card was required). This is allegedly to control cheating, admittably a plus, and "no charges will be placed on your card". One can also understand this request considering the amount of data that is saved freely for literally thousands of online players. On the communication side on things, occasionally you will enter a game where the headsets are not functioning. However, experience shows this can be remedied by simply leaving and finding another game. Once the headsets are working, be prepared for an overabundance of cursing as that is what online Socom chatter is primarily composed of. But to be fair, there is always an endless supply of polite congratulatory praise to be earned when you do well for your team. Green up!

Despite any minor recurring flaws, there is no denying the Socom game makers have an enduring and successful game franchise on their hands.
