Tekken 5The standards are slipping...but still brilliant! Tekken is back with another classic after the somewhat shambolic effort of tekken 4. The game plays a lot better than the previous installment. It is much more easy to crouch and you don't end-up sidestepping while trying to jump. All of the classic characters are back along with three newbies. I'm not one to judge Tekken but i think Namco might have lost it in this department. Raven is an extremely mysterious ninja sent to kill...oh wait no spoilers! His fighting style combines some fast, strong and complicated juggles with some powerful grabs. Asuka, daughter of Jun, is basically an exact copy of her mother. All the same moves and she even looks like her, nevertheless she is a welcome addition to the roster, as Jun was in my opinion the greatest female character the Tekken series has ever seen. Feng is just some weirdo who doesn't really have any connections to anyone in the game. Well, if he does they haven't been shown yet, very strange fighting style which makes him look more like a confused mongoose in some flamboyantly coloured nightgown than a proffesional fighter....but whatever floats your boat....The game-completion-movies remain for every character but I am sorry to say that it looks like they have failed here too. Most of the movies last about 20 seconds and appear to be based around made-up comedy scenarios rather than sticking to the true storyline that those die-hard fans amongst you are sure to miss. However, these little comedy snippets can amuse (i.e the sumo Ganryu falling in love with nature girl Julia). Everyone's costumes can be changed and new items can be purchased after winning money in arcade mode. Another highlight for those big fans of the series amongst you is......*drum roll*....you get the arcade modes from Tekken 1, 2 and...3! All those old characters and classic backgrounds are there for you to relive those wonderful PS1 days. This is also a handy option for beginners as they can experience the other classic games in the series and get to know the world of Tekken a little better. Back to negatives and the worst part of all....undoubtedly it is Jins sub-game Devil Within. A painfully shambolic effort at a remake of the Tekken Force game from Tekken 3. Basically you play as Jin in some kind of 3rd person "mission-based" arcade game. Possibly a good idea and it seems to have had potential, but unfortunately it is extraordinarily basic, walk into room, beat enemies, get key, open door, lather, rinse, repeat. Only worth even glancing at if you want to find out more about Jin's past, and let's face it...he isnt really the most interesting of characters. Apart from this however, it is a great game but as my first line implies the standards are slipping and we can only hope that the best is still to come on the PS3 version.
