PC Game Reviews: Guild Wars

Guild Wars
Guild Wars is an interesting approach to an MMORPG. Unlike other MMORPGs, Guild Wars gives you the ability to travel with other players to complete quests, or the ability to complete quests in a solo fashion, with or without the help of non playable characters. The main cities and social areas are the areas that are populated with visible online players. These areas are broken down into districts, to make it easier to find players of similar speaking languages. It is here that you have the ability to interact directly with other players. Once outside one of these social areas, you only interact with non playable characters, or members of your guild or questing party. This adds a bit of uniqueness to the approach used by the creators of Guild Wars. In this way players can feel free to explore and complete quests without the dependency of other players being online. It also gives players the ability to learn the game without feeling foolish by making mistakes or not knowing the controls very well. Another unique idea introduced in Guild Wars is the evolving storyline which unfolds as you progress. Instead of having a static world that is always the same each time you travel out, the world around you changes as you progress through the storyline. When first starting out, the world around you is green and lush, after the second part of the story kicks in, your surroundings will be barren and desolate. The world of Guild Wars is quite large and full of hidden items and quests. I found this game to be a fantastic alternative to games like Final Fantasy Online and Worlds of Warcraft where subscription fees are an issue. Once Guild Wars has been purchased the online play is free. Your characters are stored on the Guild Wars servers. In this way, if you need to get the client again or lose your disk you simply download the client from the Guild Wars site and login with your credentials. This game comes complete with public, private and guild chat, hidden actions, and a lot more. The graphics and sound are fantastic. The controls are very easy to use. I highly recommend this game to all those who have not played it or are looking for a far less expensive alternative to subscription based MMORPGs.
