Star Wars: Battlefront 2There are only a few Star Wars games that come even close to the feel of Battlefront 2. No other Star Wars game has put you and you only into the shoes of a normal clone, stormtrooper, battle droid or alliance trooper, handed you a weapon and let you blast your opponents into smithereens on planets plucked directly out of the movies. The music, the cries of 'For the Chancellor!' and 'See if plastic armour can stop that!' echoing from your fellow team mates as you rush, all guns blazing, towards an enemy outpost. For feel alone, this game should get 11 out of 10.
But there are constant niggles at the player that force you out of that Star Wars coolness. To be honest, your CPU team mates are as thick as the hull of Star destroyers. Instead of the teamwork feel of moving forward as one, the player is left, quite literally moving as one, being forced to go it alone against the enemy as your allies run concentrate on the shooting of a guy in a turret whilst the enemy charge right at them. At some times, it feels that your the only thing on the battlefield with a brain.
The new additions are very nice. Space battles are so much fun, with the great idea of being able to fly into an enemy ship's hangar and blowing it up from the inside out. And the addition of 'Hero' characters is a very nice suprise, allowing the player to take control of the movies heroes and villains on the front line.
However, there some problems with these additions as well. The PS2's inability to allow that many players on a team at one time - even less so in space - is robbing the player even more of the feel of the movies. When you expect to see hundreds of little ships flying around shooting, but you end up with about ten.
The Jedi characters have also lost their sense of power as well. In Battlefront 1 (Where the player couldn't play as the hero) the Jedi and Sith characters had a sense of fear and invincibility about them - you would literally quake in your boots as they strode towards you, cutting swathes through your fellow troops with a single sweep of their sabers. But now, they appear to be more feeble and less, well, hero-y. It just takes a volley of rifle fire to take one out, and they very rarely try to block the shots. Playing as one is worse - since when does it take 3 or 4 swipes of a lightsaber to kill some one in Star Wars?
In all, Star Wars fans should get this for the feel of intergalactic warfare in your living room, but the casual gamer should only just consider it, as they'll notice the niggles a lot more.
