DS Game Reviews: Mario Kart DS

Mario Kart DS
Ok, this game was pretty cool when it came out a few years back on the Nintendo 64, but now this game is killer. The game is decent in single player mode, but in multiplayer mode it is awesome. You can have a grip of friends all wifi in and race on one single game cartridge. In single player, you can race and unlock more tracks for use in the multiplayer mode. If you haven't played the original Mario Kart for the Nintendo 64, you should definately pick this one up. The graphics are good, the sound is good and the gameplay is awesome. The controls are the same as the original which means, if you're a Mario Kart veteran from way back when like I am, then you are almost unstoppable now. I race against almost any kid who has a DS and happens to be in the immediate area, yeah...I'm such a jerk. For those unfamiliar with this game and the way it plays, here's how it goes. You select a character and kart type. Then as you race around the track you try to come in first place, obviously, but you also pick up power-ups to smite other players...and that's where it get's fun. Anyway, I highly recommend this game to all, it's just pure multiplayer fun.

Mario and his karting friends make an outstanding leap on to the Nintendo DS, also carrying the burden of Online WiFi multiplayer into the world. Get your Red Shells ready.....

As with the other Mario Kart games, Mario, Luigi, Peach and friends start up their engines to race against each other across 32 different tracks set in the Mushroom kingdom world - 16 completly new Tracks, such as Tick Tock clock (Based around the level from Super Mario 64) and Cheep Cheep Beach, and 16 'Retro' tracks converted from the SNES, N64, GBA and GameCube versions, like Mushroom Bridge from Double Dash!!, and Sky Gardens from Super circuit. The new tracks are a joy to play, challenging and beautiful to look at, for example the outstanding Waluigi Pinball, a track where the Player is shot to the top of a giant pinball machine, and then must make their way down whilst not only avoiding items from other Karters, but giant Pinballs as well!
However, the Retro tracks seem to suffer a bit. The conversions are done very well, the GameCube tracks are a fine example of this, looking almost exactly as they do on the GC. however, playing the SNES and GBA tracks in comparison to the others, They seem to be rather bland - The SNES tracks tripping up on the fact they are too short (Koopa Beach 2, I'm looking at you here...), and the GBA tracks are a tad too long, especially the utter drabness of Luigi Circuit. The retro tracks are rather pointless, when Nintendo could have just as easily created another couple more new tracks.
The DS outing also features the usual Time Trials, Grand Prixs (Available in 50-150cc's, as well as 150cc mirror) and Battle modes, but also includes a VS mode for racing against the computer for the first time in the series and a Mission mode, where players have to complete specific tasks within a time limit, such as collecting coins or destroying boxes. There is an incentive to return to the grand prix, time trial and mission modes to get stars above your name in multiplayer as medals of your Karting excellence, and 4 new characters to unlock: Daisy, Waluigi, Dry Bones and R.O.B the Robot (Older gamers will remember R.O.B as the unsuccessful robot peripheral of the SNES system), as well as a plethora of different karts - 36 in all, all adding to the longevity of the single player game.
However, Mario Kart DS comes into its own in Multiplayer, with the option to play from 1 copy of the game with up to eight players, or with more than one copy to gain access to everyone getting their own choice of racer and Kart (Shy Guy is the standard racer in simple mode) and a wider selection of Tracks to play on. Mario Kart is a legend in multiplayer, guaranteed to have you playing with friends for the forseeable future.
Mario Kart DS also begins Nintendo's Online gaming age, with the WiFi connection service. Players can hook up with fellow Karters from across the World and play against each other in a few races. However, the online Karting world is Rife with quitters - People who turn the game off to stop you from winning, and also despite with a broadband connection, the other players seem to dart unpredictably around the course, making it very hard to aim items at them.
In conclusion, Mario Kart DS is Fantastic, and despite a few bumps in the selection of Tracks available, It is a definite must have for all DS owners.

9/10 stars - Great!
