Dragon Quest 8: Journey of The Cursed KingThis game is an amazing amount of fun to play. This RPG follows the same battle format as any Final Fantasy title but instead of static backgrounds that you maneuver around in, this world is rendered realtime in full 3D with all the characters cell shaded to give them a cartoonish look. At first, the world you wonder around in reminded me of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, but as I played on I realized that it was more like the world in Gothic. As you move from one place to another, you can actually see objects in the distance become more clear until you can actual touch them. There is no loading from place to place as you move around in the open. The only loading that takes place is when you enter a town or an underground level, even then the loading time is a blink. Personally, I found it very hard to stop playing this game once I got started. The storyline is quite interesting, the premise is a forbidden scepter was kept in a castle called Trodain, until a mysterious jester stole it. The jester used the scepter's power to turn Trodain into a land covered in thorns and frozen in time. He then turned the King and Princess into hideous beasts. You spend most of your time completing quests to help lead you in the right direction as to the whereabouts of the jester and to find a cure of the King and Princess. The voice over work in this game is fantastic, one of the best voiced over titles I have ever seen. The characters are very expressive and fun. The graphics although not breathtaking by today's standards, do a good job in conveying the world of Dragon's Quest in a way that is bright an cheery. Another aspect of this game which is quite interesting is the strength and weakness of the enimies you encounter as the days turn to night as you play. If you adventure out after it's dark, the enemies are much stronger than in the daytime. Overall I really enjoyed playing this game, it reminds me of the fun I had playing the first two Final Fantasy titles. I highly recommend this game to anyone who appreciates a good RPG.
