PC Game Reviews: Quake 4

Quake 4
Quake 4 is very much like Doom 3, but instead of being alone throughout the entire game, you have quite a few fellow marines to keep you company and watch your back. Now understand that there is nothing ground breaking about this game however, it is a fun play. The storyline is pretty straight forward, infiltrate the alien homeworld, and destroy the enemy. The actual gameplay is very much like Doom 3 but with new weapons and oh yeah, you can hold a flash light and a weapon at the same time, some weapons anyway. There are a variety of new weapons and the game play is quite like the previous versions of Quake, complete objectives, find alternate routes and solve little puzzles while not getting you rear end shot off by the enemy. Another constant objective in this game is, don't let your fellow marines get killed. They help you fight, but also get in your way quite a bit. And before you ask, no, you can't shoot them...believe me, there have been a few instances where I really wanted to. The sound is good, it's full 3D sound to help take advantage of surround sound systems. The graphics are pretty much the same as Doom 3 but just not quite as dark and macabre. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of blood and body parts flying about, but just not done in a nightmarish kind of way. Overall I'd have to say I like this game, I look forward to playing it every moment I have time, it's just pure fun. I recommend this game to all those FPS gamers who liked Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. It's not as good in my opinion as Half-Life 2, not by a long shot, but it is good enough to buy and enjoy.

Ok, there is a segment in this game I didn't expect and it's pretty sweet. There is a point in this game after you get knocked out by the Strogg, where you get taken through their Strogg assembly line and turned into a Strogg. Although this is pretty sick, well...the process is anyway. Once your done, you can read Strogg and you understand what the Strogg are saying to each other. Very inventive, this tidbit has fueled my interest in the rest of this game, what else is going to happen?
