Wii Reviews: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Twilight Princess has had a lot riding on it. Ever since it was announced fans have been working themselves into a frenzy over its promise of a more realistic experience than Wind Waker. Of course, if you're looking to buy it at this stage, you probably don't really care too much about this side of it. But if you are a fanboy, suffice to say it's good, but not as good as say, Ocarina of Time or Link to the Past.

The story is pretty much like any other Zelda game, i.e. Link (your character) gets drawn away from his peaceful life in some backwater area and goes off to fight against an evil enemy who has taken over the land. In TP the enemy is called Zant, and isn't really seen until near the end, which is a little disappointing, but the norm in a Zelda game.

The graphics are good, with epic, sweeping vistas and small, intricate details, which are miles better than anything else on the Wii so far, although not up to par with the Xbox 360. Mind you, the 360's launch titles weren't so hot either, but still...

The action is great and the puzzles range from simple to irritating, but never seem to reach the higher difficulty levels of a typical Zelda game. This is a shame, as I went through expecting to get caught out just around the next corner, but never did. The boss battles are also a little simple, and I beat them all first time around, with weak spots glaringly obvious and attacks quite simple to dodge.
Plot-wise, this is (as mentioned) pretty standard Zelda far (which is good), but there are some parts that stand out, notably what happens after you complete the 3rd dungeon (don't worry, I won't reveal it here). Unfortunately, the plot twist at the end isn't that great, and is quite predictable, but it's still fun to go along with the ride nonetheless.

So, overall, this game is great fun, and hugely absorbing, but lacks something compared to other Zelda titles. Although the best game the Wii so far, you could always download Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past, and the original Legend of Zelda, plus buy the Classic controller for around the same price. As an alternative to TP, I'm afraid this is really the more tempting of the two.
