Wii Reviews: Red Steel

This game was decent, but could have been a lot better. When I saw this game, I was expecting a game where the sword fighting would be right on. Where the sword would actually follow the movements of the Wii remote, but unfortunately this just a quick move of the wrist that triggers the attack, very sloppily I might add.

The game starts out decent enough, you're a bodyguard, your new fiance is going to introduce you to her dad, who just happens to be the head of a large Yakuza clan. It all goes down hill from there as you fight your was past thugs of all kinds, neo ninjas and yes even guys dressed up like women with pink hair in Japanese school girl uniforms. The game from a strickly FPS perspective is decent, and it is kind of fun to play this game with the new Wii remote styled look and shoot (takes a little getting used to however), but overall I was a bit disappointed in this game, especially when it came down to the sword fighting portion.

When you get into a sword fight, the only real following of the Wii remote you get is the direction of the attack. Swing from left to right and you get a swipe from left to right. Try and stab....and you get nothing. The response time was really slow too, I found myself spending most of my time talking in Taz to the game wondering why it wasn't moving at the speed I was. This was the biggest let down in the game.

Next, the voiceovers were decent at best, and that's being really kind. There's nothing worse than obviously non-Japanese people trying to speak with a Japanese accent by just changing the L's to R's. That part pained me.

The soundtrack was decent, and the storyline was decent. From just a purely FPS standpoint it's not a terrible game, but it really isn't a very good one either. I'd say, if you have the extra cash and you've beaten all the other games currently out for the Wii then go ahead and pick this up out of boardom, otherwise if you can, skip this title.
