Playstation 2 Game Reviews: Lego Star Wars

Lego Star Wars
The Star Wars saga has had a few ups and downs when it comes to video games. From the excellent Knights of the Old Republic series, to the godawful Jedi Power battles, Star Wars games have never really quite managed to capture the true esscence of the movies. Until now, that is.

Although designed for kids, Lego Star Wars gives players a simply controlled, yet challenging game of, starting as Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, following the stories of the prequel saga through different levels. These levels are accessed from the hub area of Dexter Jettser's diner (From Star Wars Episode II), where players can purchase extra characters, secret codes and tips from Dexter with the different coloured lego studs found by the player in the games levels. The diner is also an area for the characters unlocked by the player to hang about in, with the added fan-boy quirkiness of going outside into the street to find Good and Evil lego characters that you've unlocked fighting each other. Players can also find pieces of Minikit vehicles dotted throughout each level, which when completed, form Star Wars vehicles that can be viewed outside of dexter's diner.

The visual style and music of Lego Star Wars is amazing; capturing the feel of the Star Wars movies perfectly. the occasional cutscenes in levels are full of humour - particularly the fact that Obi-Wan can never get the hang of force jump - and the music places you directly within the star wars world, adding a strong sense of coolness to the levels, especially the Level from Episode II set in the Geonosis Arena - where moments like this are Star Wars shaped slices of heaven.

The game always keeps you coming back for more, whether it be to unlock the ships and characters, or to play levels with any of the characters you have found in freeplay mode. By collecting enough studs throughout each of the levels, players can unlock a sneak preview level set around the first scenes of A New Hope, where Darth Vader must find Princess Leia aboard her ship, followed by the tantalising promise of 'To Be Continued....'

However, Lego Star Wars is not just for one player though. A second Player can join in the fun at any time in the game, and leave at any time as well!

So, In conclusion, although aimed at young children, every Star Wars fan must own what quite possibly could be one of the greatest Star Wars video game experiences ever. Roll on Lego Star Wars 2!
