Playstation 2 Game Reviews: Grandia III

Grandia III
Grandia III takes you back to the days when RPG giants such as Final Fantasy and the like were simple, yet grasping and fun. With a rich storyline and incredible new battle system, this game keeps you glued to the set and can even be appreciated by friends or family just watching. This RPG title moves away from the standard walk back and forth until you level up high enough to beat the next guy, and more into a thick storyline driven system that gives you the opportunity to fight the enimies now and level...or pay for it later. The atmosphere in this game is bright and cheery with a few comical twists that are actually quite entertaining. The graphics are good, not great, but good. The graphics remind me of Final Fantasy VII, the characters, map, etc. The sound is good, and there is quite a few cut scenes with decent voice over acting. The kicker for me is the new battle system. It is a stop and go battle system, but it is implemented in a way I have never seen before. Unlike normal stop and go systems, you can see how long you have to wait for the next attack opportunity and see your enemy's wait time. Then you can act upon the wait time by striking your opponent at just the right time to cancel his attack or make him wait longer. To add to the battle fun, the time actually pauses between attack opportunities and you can double up your attacks or even create multiple character combination attacks that just devistate the enemy. The standard equipment and accessory system is there but with a little twist to it. The characters will actually learn new spells, attacks and tactics while fighting. They will build up skill points then at the moment they learn a new skill, will execute that skill and leave you saying "Whoa...what was that?". This game is very cool, and very well worth your time. If you love a good RPG, then pick this one up and play it for a day. You'll see what I mean. I highly recommend this game to all lovers of fun and classic RPG's.
