Playstation 2 Game Reviews: Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows

Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows
Gauntlet Seven Sorrows is a good next generation version of the previous games. From the originial Gauntlet and Gauntlet 2 arcade titles we now get the dungeon lord voice saying things like "Elf is about to die." and "Valkyrie needs food, badly". This in my opionion is a neccessity and should have been in all the titles, but at least it's there now. We also get some really enhanced graphics, attack combinations, spells and attribute power-ups. Like most games of this type, the original hack and slash is moving toward more of an RPG driven system. The initial character becomes more evolved as you find armor power-ups and apply attribute power-ups. One the best things to be added to this game is the mulitple combination system. Where players can use a number of attacks, combinations and finishers to get the job done. Different attack types and finishers can be unlocked as you progress through the game and collect gold. At the end of every level each player is allowed to add any new attributes to their character as well as purchase new attack types and finishers. As with all the previous versions of Gauntlet, this game is better played cooperative with friends. Although the storyline isn't that fantastic, and the range in which cooperative characters can be away from each other is very limiting, this game over all is quite fun to play. The storyline basically follows four immortal warriors as they try to defeat the seven sorrows put in place by a ruthless emperor. It is no where near as fun as Dungeons And Dragons Heroes, but it is a decent play with friends. The in game control can become a little bothersome from time to time being that the control sometimes appears to be a little sluggish. This game is also a little short for my tastes, I was able to get through the first five sorrows in only an hour or two, but being that you can keep your characters for new games, it might even things out a bit. I recommend this game to fans of the Gauntlet franchise or younger audiences looking to get into multiplayer hack and slashes, as for everyone else I wouldn't waste your time.
